Hi Cara,
Today I am reviewing the first book in a series I am listening to via Audible. Don't Rush Me is book 1 in the Nora Jacobs series by Jackie May.
Most humans have no idea that a dark and deadly underworld, filled with magic and monsters, exists. They wander through life blissfully ignorant of the supernatural world around them. Nora Jacobs is different. Nora knows exactly what kinds of hellish creatures haunt the streets of Detroit.
Thanks to a unique set of psychic abilities, Nora has managed to steer clear of the underworld most of her life. But all that changes the night the most powerful vampire in the city discovers her gifts and decides to use her as a tool to find one of his missing clan members.
As if that’s not bad enough, Nora believes she’s cursed. All her life, people, especially men, have been drawn to her—some to the point of obsession and violence. Underworlders, it seems, are not immune to this curse, and now she’s caught the attention of some of the most dangerous monsters in the city.
Neck deep in an investigation only she can solve, Nora quickly makes as many new allies as she does enemies. Her biggest problem is staying alive long enough to decide which is which.
*This is a slow burn reverse harem romance.

Don't Rush Me is an urban fantasy mystery that is currently in the friend zone waiting for the romance to happen.
I am always a fan of the magical world being secret to the human world. This is the case in Don't Rush Me that they are hiding in plain sight. I like that they even have their own club.
Nora Jacobs is a human with her own set of gifts. I have read books with characters with psychic gifts, but I haven't seen them used in this way before. I find this an interesting take no the ability. As it gives added drama to the story with what she sees and hears. It also a handy gift for searching for clues. It will be interesting to see how it's used going forward.
The mystery that Nora gets dragged into interesting, and it's great seeing that not all monsters are evil and not all humans are good.
There is a great cast of male characters all different magically being. I like most of them, but a shout out goes to Terrance the Troll. Normally you don't see trolls in fantasy books but I like Terrance and his protectiveness.
The narrator is Hollie Jackson, I have listened to her before and enjoyed the voices she uses. She is really good at snark and sarcasm.
Overall I enjoyed the book as it has many things I like in the book;
- Magic
- Mystery
- Romance
- Action
- Banter
My Rating for Don't Rush Me is 4.2 out of 5.
