Book Review: Listen to Me (Rizzoli & Isles #13) by Tess Gerritsen

Hi Cara,

Today I am reviewing Listen to Me, which is book 13 in the legendary Rizzoli and Isles series.

Synopsis

Mothers know best . . . But who will listen?

Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles are plagued by what seems like a completely senseless murder. Sofia Suarez, a widow and nurse who was universally liked by all her neighbors, lies bludgeoned to death in her own home. But anything can happen behind closed doors, and Sofia seemed to have plenty of secrets in her last days, making covert phone calls to old contacts and traceless burner phones. When Jane finally makes a connection between Sofia and the victim of a hit-and-run months earlier, the case only grows more blurry. What exactly was Sofia involved in? One thing is clear: The killer will do anything it takes to keep their secret safe.

Meanwhile, Angela Rizzoli hasn’t had a decent night’s sleep in all the years since her daughter became a homicide detective. Maybe the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree. Nothing in her neighborhood gets by Angela - not the gossip about a runaway teenager down the block and definitely not the strange neighbors who have just moved in across the street. Angela’s sure there’s no such thing as coincidence in her sleepy suburb. If only Jane would listen; instead she writes off Angela’s concerns as the result of an overactive imagination. But Angela’s convinced there’s a real wolf in her vicinity, and her cries might now fall on deaf ears.

With so much happening on the Sofia case, Jane and Maura already struggle to see the forest for the trees, but will they lose sight of something sinister happening much closer to home?

Opinion

I know when i pick up a Tess Gerritsen book that I will be getting a good story and Listen to Me did not disappoint.

PLOT: There are four POV’s in Listen to Me. As expected Jane and Maura POV. But we also get Angie Jane Mother POV and a new character called Amy POV. Jane, Maura and Amy tell the story of a murder of a nurse, and how that murder maybe connected to Amy Hit and run as well as a murder and child abduction nearly 20 years ago. We see the character personal life as well as the unraveling of the case. While Angie POV focus on her neighbourhood, a missing girl and a new strange couple. Her story shows the drama and secrets a little neighbourhood can have and everything not always as it seems.

CHARACTERS: One of the reason I have come back to this series 13 times is I enjoy the characters. Especially seeing the different strength of women in a male dominated field, and how they tackle their job and personal lives. In listen to me part of the book is told via Jane mother Angie POV and the going on in her neighbourhood. I liked this side story, but there where time where i did find Angie a little annoying. I liked how it was resolved and how she dealt with certain situations. But I completely understand why Jane would avoid answering her calls.

WRITING STYLE: By having the story told in multiple first person accounts, it helps keep the story going at a decent pace. It also help with the mixture of personal details within the case(s) / mysteries. The personal aspects don’t go to long, but allow you to see characters in a different light.

THEME: Crime, Mystery, Abuse, Murder, Stalking, Family.

OVERALL:  A really enjoyable mystery, that kept me entertained over the two nights I read it.

My rating for Listen to me is 4 out of 5.
