Book Review: Jade City (The Green Bone Sage #1) by Fonda Lee

Hi Cara

Today review is regarding the first book in The Green Bone Sage by Fonda Lee, Jade City.

Two crime families, one source of power: Jade.

Jade is the lifeblood of the city of Janloon – a stone that enhances a warrior’s natural strength and speed. Jade is mined, traded, stolen and killed for, controlled by the ruthless No Peak and Mountain families.

When a modern drug emerges that allows anyone – even foreigners – to wield jade, simmering tension between the two families erupts into open violence. The outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all in the families, from their grandest patriarch to even the lowliest motorcycle runner on the streets.

(Synopsis from Goodreads.com)

Jade City is a fiercely brilliant Asain inspired fantasy. That brings loyalty, clan rivalry, powerful ability, family drama, greed all wrapped in a crime drama.

I started listening to the book via audible, the voice acting was amazing and I connected the characters. I listened to the book till about halfway through something happened which was like an emotional gut punch. As I was listening to the book at work, and to save me from crying in my office I swapped to the ebook version to finish the book.

In Jade City, the story is told in four POV. (We do get parts of the story from characters but the below 4 are the most important in my eyes.

Lan: Oldest Bother and recently anointed Pillar leader of the No Peak Clan.

Hilo: Middle Child and Horn of the No Peak Clan, The Horn deals with the ‘military’ side of the clan.

Sha: Youngest of the Kauls, recently returned to Keko after distancing herself from the clan.

Andren: Adopted Granson of Kaul Sen (Lan, Hilo and Sha Grandfather.) He is in his last year at the Green Bone academy. He is of mixed Heritage.

I liked all four of the character. Even when I don’t agree with a certain aspect of there behaviour. It says something about these character than even when I wasn’t reading the book I was thinking about the character and questioning their choices.

The plot is interesting and multi-layer as everyone had their own path and story to tell. Jade City has plenty of action, tension and drama to keep you hooked.

I am now invested in the survival of the No Peak Clan.
“The Clan is my Blood, and the Pillar is it’s Master.”

My Rating for Jade City is 4.8 out of 5.
