Hi Cara,
I was looking for a new book to listen to and I stumbled across Hounded by Kevin Hearne. Hounded is the first book in the Iron Druid Chronicles, I was drawn to the book because of magic, Gods and the ability the lead character to speak to his dog.
Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound.
His neighbours and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old—when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer.
Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries. Now the determined deity has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power—plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, his vampire and werewolf team of attorneys, a bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good old-fashioned luck of the Irish—to kick some Celtic arse and deliver himself from evil.

Hounded is a great story that got me hooked into The Iron Druid Chronicles.
I didn’t know much about Druid other than the stereotype of long-bearded tree hugged hippies. But Atticus is anything but a stereotype. He is smart, witty and handsome. Who is very good at welding a sword.
The world that hounded is set in, is a modern world. But all the Gods, witches and supernatural creature exist. In this world, normal people are not aware of supernatural existence. I enjoyed the fact that all religions God exist in the world so every religion is correct. Sometimes the Gods don’t exist in complete harmony.
One of my favourite aspects of the book is its cast of characters. After Atticus, my favourite characters are Oberon Atticus Dog and Atticus widowed neighbour Mrs MacDonagh. I love Oberon perspective on the world and MacDonagh no-nonsense approach and willingness to let Atticus bury a body in her back garden.
Some of my favourite quotes are below;
“Monty Python is like catnip for Nerds. Once you get them started quoting it, they are constitutionally incapable of feeling depressed.”
“Wow, you need to get some sun.
Shut up, I’m Irish.”
“This guy is an epic douche. Kick his shiny ass, Oberon said.”
The plot of Hounded is interesting engaging, funny with magic and action. I hated having to stop listening as I want to see what trouble Atticus would get up to next and what Oberon comment would be.
I will definitely be listening to the rest of the Iron Druid Chronicles.
My rating for Hounded is 5 out of 5.
