Book Review: Aurora Burning ( The Aurora Cycle #2) by Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff

Hi Cara,

After finishing Aurora Rising, I knew I wanted to read Aurora Burning straight away. I decided to listen read Aurora Burning so I didn’t have to stop finding out what happened to squad 312.

First, the bad news: an ancient evil—you know, your standard consume-all-life-in-the-galaxy deal—is about to be unleashed. The good news? Squad 312 is standing by to save the day. They’ve just got to take care of a few small distractions first.

Like the clan of gremps who’d like to rearrange their favorite faces.

And the cadre of illegit GIA agents with creepy flowers where their eyes used to be, who’ll stop at nothing to get their hands on Auri.

Then there’s Kal’s long-lost sister, who’s not exactly happy to see her baby brother, and has a Syldrathi army at her back. With half the known galaxy on their tails, Squad 312 has never felt so wanted.

When they learn the Hadfield has been found, it’s time to come out of hiding. Two centuries ago, the colony ship vanished, leaving Auri as its sole survivor. Now, its black box might be what saves them. But time is short, and if Auri can’t learn to master her powers as a Trigger, the squad and all their admirers are going to be deader than the Great Ultrasaur of Abraaxis IV.

Shocking revelations, bank heists, mysterious gifts, inappropriately tight bodysuits, and an epic firefight will determine the fate of the Aurora Legion’s most unforgettable heroes—and maybe the rest of the galaxy as well.

Aurora Burning heightens the drama and action that was seen in Aurora Rising.

The audiobook group performance of Aurora Burning really brought the story to life. I really love the voice of Kai, I would have been happy for him to voice the full book tbh (Swoon) As I want from audio to the physical book the voice stayed in my head. Especially when Saedi says Tyler Jones.

Aurora Burning picks up a couple of days after Aurora Rising. You would think that as only a short time has passed between the two books they wouldn’t be a lot of character growth but would be wrong. All of them have changed and become better versions of themselves. Also in Aurora Burning, we find out more about some of the character history. Zila especially broke my heart.

The tone in Aurora Burning is more serious than Aurora Rising, although there are many laughs there aren’t as many as in Aurora Rising. This isn’t a bad thing as the situation squad 312 is more serious than Aurora Rising.

One of my favourite elements of Rising / Burning is the attraction between character, and that Scarlet isn’t seen less than for being a flirt with many ex-boyfriends. Also no judgement of same-sex attraction.

There is a couple of revelation made in Aurora Burning, one surprised me, one not so much. But the implications of these revelations will / are interesting to read.

The ending seriously Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff are evil geniuses. Now the wait beings for book 3.

My rating for Aurora Burning is 4.3 out of 5.
