Hi Cara,
Today I am reviewing Dead Ground by M.W Craven. Dead Ground is book 4 in the Washington Poe series. The other books are;
Detective Sergeant Washington Poe is in court, fighting eviction from his beloved and isolated croft, when he is summoned to a backstreet brothel in Carlisle where a man has been beaten to death with a baseball bat. Poe is confused - he hunts serial killers and this appears to be a straightforward murder-by-pimp - but his attendance was requested personally, by the kind of people who prefer to remain in the shadows.
As Poe and the socially awkward programmer Tilly Bradshaw delve deeper into the case, they are faced with seemingly unanswerable questions: despite being heavily vetted for a high-profile job, why does nothing in the victim's background check out? Why was a small ornament left at the murder scene - and why did someone on the investigation team steal it? And what is the connection to a flawlessly executed bank heist three years earlier, a heist where nothing was taken...Â

Dead Ground is a Crime mystery with a lot of secrets.
I feel the best way to describe Washington Poe is if you have a dog and they get something stuck under a piece of furniture. And they don't stop until they get it out. If left alone the owner will come back to the room destroyed but a happy dog with their prize. This is what happening as D.I Flynn is still off and Poe and Till have no adult supervision.
I know I was going to enjoy Dead Ground from the moment Poe confirmed he was happy not having a lawyer but Tilly instead. I would pick Tilly over a Lawyer.
The case is interesting, as it's a crime mystery that has elements of crime, military, suspected terrorism, and lots of secrets. The people that Poe and Tilly deal with really rub Poe & Tilly up the wrong way. I will now be telling people to go boil an egg, instead of telling them to get lost.
M.W Craven is very talented at storytelling as he has created a gripping story, that can be read as a standalone. But the people that have read the other books will love the callback and characters growth. The friendship between Poe and Tilly is one of my favourite things.Â
Memorable Moments
- Tilly introduction to the Judge
- Anytime Tilly and Poe fist bump.Â
- Poe's reaction to Bearnie Spoon
- Poe reaction to giving up his phone
- Poe reaction to being told not to do something
- The missing item
- The connection between the case
- The revels
- The stand off.
My Rating for Dead Ground is 5 out of 5.Â
