Book Review: The Burning Page (This Invisible Library #3) by Genevieve Cogman

Hi Cara,

Today’s post takes me back to the Invisible Library. The third book in the series is called The Burning Page.

The books in the series are;

  1. The Invisible Library
  2. The Masked City
  3. The Burning Page
  4. The Lost Plot
  5. The Mortal Word
  6. The Secret Chapter

Librarian spy Irene has professional standards to maintain. Standards that absolutely do not include making hasty, unplanned escapes through a burning besieged building.

But when the gateway back to your headquarters dramatically malfunctions, one must improvise. And after fleeing a version of Revolutionary France astride a dragon (also known as her assistant, Kai), Irene soon discovers she’s not the only one affected. Gates back to the Library are malfunctioning across a multitude of worlds, creating general havoc. She and Kai are tasked with a mission to St Petersburg’s Winter Palace, to retrieve a book which will help restore order.

However, such plans rarely survive first contact with the enemy – particularly when the enemy is the traitor Alberich. A nightmare figure bent on the Library’s destruction, Alberich gives Irene a tainted ‘join me or die’ job offer. Meanwhile, Irene’s old friend Vale has been damaged by exposure to Chaotic forces and she has no idea how to save him. When another figure from her past appears, begging for help, Irene has to take a good hard look at her priorities. And of course try to save the Library from absolute annihilation. Saving herself would be a bonus.

(Synopsis from Goodreads.com)

The Burning Page is another magical world jumping adventure story as Irene and Kai are yet again in trouble.

I like that in The Burning Page refers back to things that happened in the previous two books. It also wraps up some of those loose ends. I feel like it gives a clean slate in most ways for the next books.

Irene is one of my favourite leading ladies, she is smart, funny, incredibly resourceful. I love how her mind works as she works through her situation. Kai also is a great character and comes out of his shell, as he is more forthcoming with his opinions and ideas. You can tell that Irene, Kai and Vale have become closer and their bond is greater than before.

The plot of The Burning Pages is fast-paced and entertaining. I love seeing the other worlds and we get to visit two different worlds in The Burning Page. One of my favourite aspects is there is normally more than one thing going on in Irene life but those issues work together in tandem. Also, the different and invented ways in which to kill her were fun to read.

The Burning Page has more Kai as a dragon, Fae up to no good, Vale falling more into Sherlockism, trouble for the library, mystery intrigue and hints of betrayal.
